Artist’s Statement

Of all Madison neighborhoods, the Monroe Street area is the one that does it for me. There is such a great combination of traditional and trendy.  Everything goes as far as architecture, and the street scene is of compelling interest to my artist’s sensibility.  I love it all; Budd’s Auto Parts to Knickerbacker Square.

It was only a matter of time until I started to record my favorite places.    First with my eyes, then with photographs. Soon, these were followed by charcoal and pencil drawings, watercolors, and acrylics. Being an artist with a realist’s outlook, I tried to capture the actual look of buildings and features, but the hardest work for me is to convey to the viewer the atmosphere of the places, and the feelings they evokes in me of simultaneous excitement and familiarity.

I am working toward my biggest traveling exhibit yet. I am applying for a grant to the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission, and looking for a gallery to open the show on, where else, Monroe Street.

“Madison’s best 3D art by far.  A wonderland of color and shine. Almost a religious experience.”
